Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. On April 6th, 2010 the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost singlehandedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.

I Learned the Hard Way was produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in "The Game Gets Old" at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style "Mama Don't Like My Man" at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the "Daptone Sound" at its finest.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have come a long way since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago. Steeped within the gilded and gritty sounds of gospel, soul and funk, this nine-piece Brooklyn collective has continued to electrify fans, disc jockeys, critics, record collectors, and bloggers the world-over with their authentic, heart-felt sound. The authenticity clearly demonstrated on the band's three critically-acclaimed albums - Dap Dippin' (2002), Naturally (2005) and 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007) - captured and released by the independent Daptone Records. Their albums recall an analog era led by iconic studios like those at Motown and Stax Records, and have thrust the fifty-three-year-old Augusta, GA native and crew into the multimedia limelight.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have appeared on CNN, Good Morning New York, MTV News, VH1, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, BBC Television, NPR radio shows like Morning Edition and Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and have been covered in a slew of publications, from personal blogposts all the way to feature stories in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsweek, the Associated Press, Interview, the Village Voice, and Entertainment Weekly.

As distinguished as their recordings may be, however, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have truly become renowned thanks to their incredible live show, not to mention their relentless touring. And though it's certainly no easy task to keep such a vast ensemble on the road, the band continues to pack hundreds of clubs worldwide, from legendary venues like New York's Apollo Theater, Beacon Theater and Central Park's SummerStage to their show-stopping sets at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and WOMAD.

But besides the adoration they receive from fans across the globe, their polish and zip has also grabbed the ears of a diverse range of producers, musicians, and Hollywood execs, leading to a number of exciting collaborative projects with many different artists. Ms. Jones celebrated her silver-screen debut in the Denzel Washington-led film, The Great Debaters, in which she acted, sang, and recorded the majority of the movie's soundtrack; the band's version of Shuggie Otis's "Inspiration Information" was one of the favorites on the celebrated Dark Was The Night benefit album; and their cover of "This Land Is Your Land" prominently featured in the Golden-Globe nominated Up in the Air. In addition, Sharon has hit the studio and stage with the likes of David Byrne (including in his upcoming Here Lies Love), They Might Be Giants, Rufus Wainwright, Lou Reed and Michael Bublé. Not to be outdone, the Dap-Kings' musical chops have also been in high-demand. Legendary soul icon Al Green tapped their services for his Grammy-winning Blue Note release, Lay It Down; Public Enemy beatmaster/producer Hank Shocklee made use of them for the soundtrack for the feature film, American Gangster; and Mark Ronson utilized them for much of Amy Winehouse's GRAMMY-winning Back to Black (one of those GRAMMYs went bandleader/producer/label impresario Gabe Roth for his engineering work, too).

The Heavy
In Noid, a tiny hamlet situated to the south west of Bath, some of the most dangerous and ill sounding beats and riffs are being created by four wolf like personalities. The Heavy started out ripping and chopping beats from the likes of Bo Diddley, Little Walter and The Parliaments and fusing them with their now patented brand of high grade dirt. Guitar riffs that intoxicate, bass lines that reverberate around your head like a King Jammy dream and vocals that will challenge any of the genres they decide to take on.

The Heavy continually cross genres as they as a unit are proud to be completely musically schizophrenic. From country to rhythm and blues, garage punk to rock and roll, Studio one to the slums of shaolin, you'll find that The Heavy are indeed like a pack of chemists with the way that genres get cooked up, blended, stirred and then mixed, to create their own unique style of rock and roll.

The album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire released on Counter Records in late 2007 generated a great deal of interest with songs like That kind of man, Girl, Set me free, Coleen and Dignity, firmly laying foundations for the house of dirt that they are building at present. There is no other band that sound as raw as The Sonics while holding soul in a headlock and frequently wrestling rock to the ground with the weight of Mr 808 as tag team partner. Listen, then try and tell me different.

The first single to be released from the new album 'The House That Dirt Built' will be a garage punk/ soul offering with so much weight that the likes of Bunker Hill and Syl Johnson will wonder why the two genres never came together more often. 'Oh no! Not you again!' is a testament to the evil and vices that we all surround ourselves with but don't necessarily want......or need.

The track, recorded in one take in a dirty little shack, in a crazy little town, in the west country features vocals from Shingai Shoniwa of The Noisettes and Jim Abbiss on mix and co production duty. You will not experience another song like this from any other band this year. So dirty. So much weight. So much energy and laced with a soul that you just don't hear anymore........

The Heavy have indeed created a monster.
